What is Multi-Link Operation (MLO)?

Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is one of the defining capabilities of Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be). It allows a compatible Access Point and client device to use multiple wireless links at the same time across different bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz).

In previous Wi-Fi generations, a client device connected to an Access Point over a single band and channel at a time. If conditions on that link degraded, the device had to disconnect and reconnect elsewhere. MLO removes this constraint by keeping multiple links active and available simultaneously.

What Are the Different MLO Operating Modes?

  • Multi-Link Single Radio (MLSR): the device maintains multiple link associations but transmits/receives over one link at a time, switching between them as per application requirements and/or RF conditions.
  • Enhanced Multi-Link Single Radio (eMLSR): an enhancement to MLSR where the device listens on multiple bands, enabling faster link switching, giving the device the flexibility to select the best available link for each transmission opportunity.
  • Multi-Link Multi Radio, Simultaneous Transmit and Receive (MLMR-STR): the device uses multiple radios to transmit and receive across links at the same time, aggregating throughput across bands.

What Does MLO Enable?

  • Higher throughput: traffic can be spread or aggregated across multiple links instead of being limited to one.
  • Lower latency: the device can use whichever link offers the fastest channel access at a given moment.
  • Improved reliability: if one link is congested or experiences interference, traffic can shift to another link without a disconnect.
  • Implicit band steering: MLO effectively load-balances clients across radios automatically, based on availability, load, and application needs, without requiring separate band-steering logic.
