What is an IPTV System?

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a digital television delivery system that streams TV content over the hotel’s IP network instead of traditional cable or satellite formats. In hospitality, IPTV enables guests to stream live TV channels, on-demand movies, and hotel-specific information (services, promotions, events) directly on in-room TVs through the same network infrastructure used for internet connectivity.

Content Delivery Architecture

In a hotel network, IPTV works by sending TV content through the same internet network used across the property. Instead of using cables or satellite signals, all content comes from a central system (either inside the hotel or in the cloud) and is delivered directly to the TV in the guest room. Switches and routers prioritize IPTV traffic using QoS policies and multicast VLANs to ensure smooth playback without buffering, even during peak occupancy. Guest set-top boxes or smart TVs join reserved multicast groups, while the hotel’s management network remains isolated. This segmentation also allows the hotel to push targeted ads, safety notices, or upsell offers to specific guest segments without affecting core operations.
